Soon, I found a real job at VoiceStream, now known as T-Mobile, where I did customer service. I bought new clothes that looked professional without being sexy—nice slacks, pretty blouses, no jeans, sometimes a blazer—the antithesis of the stripper costume. I was so proud of myself. At VoiceStream I had my own desk and a cubicle amid a sea of cubicles, but it was mine and I decorated it with a corkboard pinned with pictures of my friends, my mom and me, maybe a couple of inspirational quotes. I surrounded myself with little tchotchkes and all the school supplies I’d always loved: pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, highlighters. I felt good and wholesome and career focused.

The building where I worked was beautiful and new, everything modern, not all dusty and falling apart like so much of my life had been. At lunch, I sat with the other girls in the breakroom talking about our customers and our lives. Sometimes we’d go out to Dion’s for pizza at lunchtime and I’d dip my slice in ranch dressing, enjoying this new reality.

This life was a world away from anything I’d ever known. Talking with my coworkers, I never said a word about my previous line of work, sex tapes and sexual assault cases, how I’d learned ways to keep a man sliding bills into my slot at the peep show and how awful that place smelled, or the fistfights I’d gotten into in high school and the difficulty of getting blood out of my clothes afterward.

It was as if none of that had ever happened. What existed now was all that mattered.
